Box Office: ‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ Crushes Idris Elba’s ‘Beast’ With $21 Million Debut

“Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” topped the box office in its debut, beating expectations by collecting an impressive $21 million in North American ticket sales.

The anime film, playing on 3,007 screens, is being distributed domestically by Crunchyroll, which specializes in anime film and television. “Super Hero” is a necessary bright spot in an otherwise dreary August at the box office. The newest “Dragon Ball Super” installment earned twice as much as the weekend’s other new nationwide release, Universal’s survival thriller “Beast,” starring Idris Elba. Dinged by mixed reviews, “Beast” opened to a modest $11.5 million from 3,743 North American cinemas.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that ‘Dragon Ball’ fans could come together to experience and enjoy this amazing film in theaters,” Mitchel Berger, Crunchyroll’s senior VP of global commerce, said in a statement. “Crunchyroll thanks all of the fans, whether or not you are a ‘super’ fan or a newcomer, and we hope they come back again and again.”

DJ Clue has criticized the quality of some of today’s Hip Hop music, saying he thinks rap would be better if artists actually put pen to paper during the creative process.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday (August 17), ClueManatti revealed he’s not a fan of some of the music being produced today, and he offered some advice to those making music in the modern era.

“A lot of these records would be better if these rappers took a pen and pad and wrote their raps down,” Clue tweeted. “It needs to be well thought out and not just saying anything.”

He added: “Some of these songs be A,B,C, and awful.. TF.”

Heat's Udonis Haslem Will Return for 20th NBA Season, Plans to Retire After 2022-23

Udonis Haslem will return to the Miami Heat for his 20th—and final—season in the NBA.

The 42-year-old announced his decision to sign a new contract with Miami during an appearance at his youth camp on Sunday.

Haslem also noted that he will retire at the end of next season!

The Le'Nalors News of The Week - LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers agree to 2-year, $97.1 million extension

 Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has agreed to a two-year, $97.1 million contract extension that includes a player option for the 2024-25 season, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN on Wednesday.

The extension, which includes a 15% trade kicker, makes James the highest-earning player in NBA history with $532 million in career guaranteed money, surpassing Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant.

With the deal, the four-time NBA champion and MVP and 18-time All-Star eliminates concern that he could enter free agency next summer. Despite approaching 38 years old, James remains an All-NBA-level player and the centerpiece of the Lakers' contention hopes.

The Le'Nalors News of The Week - Miami unveils South Beach-inspired 'Miami Nights' alternate uniforms ahead of 2022 season

 Miami coach Mario Cristobal hopes to finally bring back the swagger that made "The U" one of the top college football programs in the country throughout the 1980s into the early 2000s. But to bring back the swagger, you have to play well. And to play well, it helps to look good. The Hurricanes are dipping into the uniform game to make it happen, releasing an alternate combination through Adidas on Friday called "Miami Nights" that provides the flair that can only be found in South Beach.

Paying tribute to the South Florida vibe is neon piping on the helmet, jersey and pants, along with a contrasting black uniform to really make the colors pop. While Miami used to be at the center of the college football world, its fashion sense certainly hasn't gone anywhere. The school has not released when the new uniforms will be worn on the gridiron this fall, but jerseys will go on sale to the public on Aug. 15.

The Le'Nalors Unsung Sunday - Harold Johnson

 Even knowledgeable fight fans have trouble recalling Harold "Hercules" Johnson, even though it wasn’t that long ago that he was in the ring. It’s a shame because from the 1950s through the early 1960s, he was one of the best middleweights and light heavyweights.

He had an admirable career record but just 32 KOs, which is probably the reason he isn’t better remembered today.

Johnson lost four of five fights with the great Archie Moore, but went the distance each time until he lost via TKO in the 14th round in 1954, his final bout with Moore. Johnson didn’t get a chance to fight for a title until 1961, when he was 33, and stopped Jesse Bowdry in nine rounds to become light heavyweight champ.

He held the belt for two years when, at 35, he lost a razor-thin 15-round split-decision to Willie Pastrano. He also won a 10-round decision over heavyweight contender Eddie Machen in a non-title bout.

Here’s a gem for boxing trivia buffs: Both Harold and his father, Phil, fought and lost to the same man, future heavyweight champ, Jersey Joe Walcott.

The Le'Nalors News Update of The Week - Bill Russell, 11-time NBA champion and Boston Celtics legend, dies at 88

 Bill Russell, an 11-time NBA champion as a player and coach with the Boston Celtics and one of the most important figures in NBA history, has died at the age of 88, his family announced Sunday. Russell passed away peacefully with his wife Jeannine by his side.

Born in Louisiana in 1934, Russell was not initially considered a top basketball prospect. His first scholarship offer came from the University of San Francisco, a school hardly known for its basketball prowess but one that Russell was able to carry to consecutive national championships in 1955 and 1956. In addition to basketball, Russell was a track star at San Francisco, notably competing in the high jump. He won an Olympic gold medal in basketball as Team USA's captain in 1956 before turning professional.

Despite his collegiate excellence, Russell was not the first pick in the 1956 NBA Draft. That honor went to Duquesne wing Si Green. That left Russell available at No. 2, where the St. Louis Hawks were drafting. However, circumstances worked in Russell's favor. Boston Celtics star Ed Macauley's son was being treated for spinal meningitis in St. Louis, so he asked the team to send him there as a favor. They did so, and Boston landed the No. 2 pick in exchange for Macauley and fellow Hall-of-Famer Cliff Hagan. The deal didn't exactly blow up in St. Louis' face. Though they lost the 1957 Finals to Boston, the Hawks came back to win it all in a 1958 rematch with the Celtics. But that would be the last championship they'd ever win. Russell won 10 more, including the next eight in a row.

The Le'Nalors News of The Week Update - XFL 2023 Showcase at Jackson State University

 Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson rolled into Jackson Saturday morning to get a look at some potential stars for his new XFL, which is set to make its debut next spring. 

“Here at Jackson State, in particular, they’ve been incredible. They’ve welcomed us with open arms. They also appreciate our desire to shine a new light on these players who want to achieve their greatness, and they should have a shot. So we’re looking in this direction, and we’re here today, and there’s a lot of talent,” said Johnson.

In the lead-up to the season, the league, now in its third iteration, will be holding showcase camps this summer with stops in Arizona, Florida, D.C., and Hawaii, among others. 

His first stop was right here in the heart of Mississippi at Jackson State, with the focus on HBCU alums.

Jackson State and Alcorn State were well represented, and chief among those were quarterback Felix Harper and linebacker Keonte Hampton.

Like everyone else in attendance today, they want to keep that football dream going, and the league’s esteemed owner wants to help with that. 

“Looking at places that are generally overlooked and even the ones that are looked at, for example, like a Jackson State when scouts come here, and they look, and they see, and they evaluate the players,” Johnson said. “Well, now we come along, and we want to evaluate the players, but maybe there is an opportunity here. Let’s explore, let’s dig deeper.”

“We’re not at the biggest level for power five, but we’re able to showcase our talent, and we can get the job no matter what school you come from,” said Harper. “Just be you. I feel like you don’t have to do nothing but just be special.”

“That’s our dream, we want to play football, we want to play in the NFL, XFL, it don’t matter. “We don’t want to give up our dream. It’s our first dream. God always has a plan, and we’re going to follow God’s plan,” Hampton said. 

“We give opportunity, but we also look for quality,” said Johnson. “So these players that are walking behind me, they bring the dreams, we bring the opportunity, but also there is a great quality, there is a great quality of work ethic and a great quality of athlete here.”

 Drivers playing loud music will be ticketed under new Florida law

TAMPA, Fla. — Turn it down or get a ticket. Florida drivers will soon receive a citation for loud music.

Jon Lackey has been installing car stereos for nearly 25 years. He said people pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to get the bass bumping in their vehicles.

“There are different shows that people put on weekly. We call it parking lot blasters. They want to open up their doors, open up their back hatch,” said owner of Blvd Customs Jon Lackey.

Pretty soon Florida drivers won’t be allowed to crank up their car stereos. Starting July 1, police will begin enforcing the re-enacted Florida statute that prohibits playing loud music within vehicles.

The law states that sound produced by a radio, tape player, or other mechanical sound-making devices or instruments from within the motor vehicle, that is “plainly audible” at a distance of 25 feet or more. Police said it’s not only a nuisance but can be dangerous.

“It can be a safety hazard if you are the operator of that vehicle, and you have that radio up so loud where you can't hear what’s going on outside of the vehicle," said Capt. William Stevens with the Bartow Police Department. "You have other sirens and emergency vehicles that come up behind you and you’re not even aware of it.”

Stevens said blasting your music could cost you a $114 fine. Lackey is not opposed to the loud music statute.

“It helps clean up the sound, so to speak. Nobody wants to be blasting their loud music at the red light,” Lackey said.

Some drivers think the statute it’s an overreach.

“After pouring so much money into my system personally, it’s kind of like I just wasted all that money, because now I can’t enjoy it like I want to. But at the same time, am I going to abide by it completely? No,” said Hayden Johnson.

Police said they will focus on educating the public before issuing citations.
