Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson rolled into Jackson Saturday morning to get a look at some potential stars for his new XFL, which is set to make its debut next spring.
“Here at Jackson State, in particular, they’ve been incredible. They’ve welcomed us with open arms. They also appreciate our desire to shine a new light on these players who want to achieve their greatness, and they should have a shot. So we’re looking in this direction, and we’re here today, and there’s a lot of talent,” said Johnson.
In the lead-up to the season, the league, now in its third iteration, will be holding showcase camps this summer with stops in Arizona, Florida, D.C., and Hawaii, among others.
His first stop was right here in the heart of Mississippi at Jackson State, with the focus on HBCU alums.
Jackson State and Alcorn State were well represented, and chief among those were quarterback Felix Harper and linebacker Keonte Hampton.
Like everyone else in attendance today, they want to keep that football dream going, and the league’s esteemed owner wants to help with that.
“Looking at places that are generally overlooked and even the ones that are looked at, for example, like a Jackson State when scouts come here, and they look, and they see, and they evaluate the players,” Johnson said. “Well, now we come along, and we want to evaluate the players, but maybe there is an opportunity here. Let’s explore, let’s dig deeper.”
“We’re not at the biggest level for power five, but we’re able to showcase our talent, and we can get the job no matter what school you come from,” said Harper. “Just be you. I feel like you don’t have to do nothing but just be special.”
“That’s our dream, we want to play football, we want to play in the NFL, XFL, it don’t matter. “We don’t want to give up our dream. It’s our first dream. God always has a plan, and we’re going to follow God’s plan,” Hampton said.
“We give opportunity, but we also look for quality,” said Johnson. “So these players that are walking behind me, they bring the dreams, we bring the opportunity, but also there is a great quality, there is a great quality of work ethic and a great quality of athlete here.”

Drivers playing loud music will be ticketed under new Florida law
TAMPA, Fla. — Turn it down or get a ticket. Florida drivers will soon receive a citation for loud music.
Jon Lackey has been installing car stereos for nearly 25 years. He said people pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to get the bass bumping in their vehicles.
“There are different shows that people put on weekly. We call it parking lot blasters. They want to open up their doors, open up their back hatch,” said owner of Blvd Customs Jon Lackey.
Pretty soon Florida drivers won’t be allowed to crank up their car stereos. Starting July 1, police will begin enforcing the re-enacted Florida statute that prohibits playing loud music within vehicles.
The law states that sound produced by a radio, tape player, or other mechanical sound-making devices or instruments from within the motor vehicle, that is “plainly audible” at a distance of 25 feet or more. Police said it’s not only a nuisance but can be dangerous.
“It can be a safety hazard if you are the operator of that vehicle, and you have that radio up so loud where you can't hear what’s going on outside of the vehicle," said Capt. William Stevens with the Bartow Police Department. "You have other sirens and emergency vehicles that come up behind you and you’re not even aware of it.”
Stevens said blasting your music could cost you a $114 fine. Lackey is not opposed to the loud music statute.
“It helps clean up the sound, so to speak. Nobody wants to be blasting their loud music at the red light,” Lackey said.
Some drivers think the statute it’s an overreach.
“After pouring so much money into my system personally, it’s kind of like I just wasted all that money, because now I can’t enjoy it like I want to. But at the same time, am I going to abide by it completely? No,” said Hayden Johnson.
Police said they will focus on educating the public before issuing citations.

With one of the most unique windups in MLB history, "The D-Train" was a fan favorite in Miami and beyond during the five seasons that he spent with the Marlins. Willis broke into the league in 2003, and won the National League Rookie of the Year Award and was an All-Star in a season where he'd also help the Marlins to capture a World Series title. Two seasons later, Willis led the National League in wins (22), complete games (seven), complete-game shutouts (five) and HR/9 (0.4), finishing second to Chris Carpenter in NL Cy Young Award voting. Willis' star didn't burn for a long time, but he sure was fun to watch at the height of his powers.

Ottis Jerome Anderson (born January 19, 1957) is an American former footballrunning back who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Giants. He played college football at Miami and was selected eighth overall in the 1979 NFL Draft by the Cardinals, where he spent his first eight seasons. In his first season, Anderson was named Offensive Rookie of the Year and received Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors when he set the Cardinals all-time record for rushing yards with 1605. He also received a second Pro Bowl selection the following year. Traded to the Giants in 1986 amid a production decline, Anderson won two Super Bowl titles in Super Bowl XXI and Super Bowl XXV. Anderson was named MVP of the latter after playing a central part in the Giants' ball-control offense that allowed them to set the Super Bowl record for time of possession.
No reasonable person is going to confuse Ottis Anderson for being one of the top-five running backs in the history of the NFL, but he is nevertheless grossly underrated by far too many who follow the NFL. Anderson is a member of the 10,000 rushing yards club. He won the Rookie of the Year and the Comeback Player of the Year awards as a professional, and Anderson was named the Most Valuable Player for Super Bowl XXV. It’s back – and more colorful and even louder than ever: The grand return of the Ultra Music Festival in downtown Miami.
People from all over the region, and likely the country, expressed their excitement Friday.
“The Miami vibe – I expect something special,” one attendee said. “Everybody is here from so many places in this world, and (we’re) all here to experience one thing: music.”
The COVID-19 pandemic canceled the event the last two years. The fest was moved to Key Biscayne the year before that.
But now? It’s back to downtown Miami, where it all started.
With all the excitement comes the big crowd and a big responsibility for first-responders.
“We have Narcan, we got IV fluids – we have anything that may be needed, whether it’s a diabetic emergency or cardiac emergency,” Lt. Pete Sanchez said.
Miami Fire Rescue units were on standby.
Officials said that a total of 64 people were evaluated by rescue workers and 14 were transported to the hospital with with varying issues, but none that were life threatening.
Police said there were four arrests made on Friday, all for possession of narcotics.
One-hundred firefighters a day will be spread throughout the event, and Miami Police were set to handle crowd control, road closures and any other issues that arise.
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.– UFC lightweight fighter Luis Pena was arrested on Saturday in Broward County.
According to records, the 28-year-old is facing felony charges of domestic violence and battery.
This is the second time this year that Pena was arrested in South Florida.
He made an appearance in bond court on Sunday morning and was ordered to stay away from the victim.
Pena was also arrested five months ago in Coral Springs on charges of robbery and battery.
2021 box office closes with more fireworks for 'Spider-Man'
NEW YORK – Hollywood closed out 2021 with more fireworks at the box office for “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which topped all films for the third straight week and already charts among the highest grossing films ever. But even with all the champagne popping for “No Way Home,” the film industry heads into 2022 with plenty of reason for both optimism and concern after a year that saw overall ticket revenue double that of 2020, but still well off the pre-pandemic pace.
Movie theaters began the year mostly shuttered but ended it with a monster smash. Sony Pictures' Marvel sequel “No Way Home” grossed an estimated $52.7 million over the weekend to bring its three-week total to $609.9 million. That ranks 10th all-time in North America. Worldwide, it's made $1.37 billion, a total that puts it above “Black Panther” and makes it the 12th highest grossing film globally.
Rapper Kodak Black arrested on trespassing charge in Pompano Beach
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Rapper Kodak Black, whose real name is Bill Kapri, was arrested early Saturday morning in Pompano Beach, the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
According to authorities, Black was taken into custody just before 1:30 a.m. near the 1600 block of Northwest 10th Drive.
Further details about the circumstances surrounding the accusations against him were not immediately released.
Black previously had a three-year federal prison sentence for falsifying documents used to buy weapons at a Miami gun store commuted by President Donald Trump on his last day in office. He had served about half his sentence.
