Le'Nalors - Deerfield Beach News - Update " Denard “Shoelace” Robinson gives back to his community "
Two
hundred and thirty kids from age 5 to 18 came out on the field at
Deerfield Beach High School (DBHS) last Saturday, July 9, to be a part
of the Lace Up Football Camp, put together by the Shoelace Foundation.
The
kids all ran drills, did ladders and other circuit training in their
T-shirts provided by the organization. They split up into age categories
and ran races to see who was the fastest. They battled the hot sun, but
they were all smiles.
This
was the second year for the event created by Jacksonville Jaguars
football player Denard “Shoelace” Robinson, a running back and wide
receiver. Robinson knows this school. He knows this community. He grew
up here, and started school at Park Ridge Elementary and eventually
graduated from Deerfield High. For him, this event is all about giving
back.
“I love my community,” he said. “I want to be the change I want to see.”
Shoelace
Foundation board member Jerry Jasmin added, “Denard always wants to
give back. He is in a unique situation in that he plays in the same
state he is from. He wants to empower underprivileged children to become
better citizens.”
Besides
local kids, children and teens from other cities, like Lauderhill came
out to participate. Coach T. Anderson coaches youth football in the 7U
category there. Two of his grandchildren, age 7 and 8, participated in
the camp and he sat with other parents on the sidelines beneath tents in
the shade.
“I
love it,” he said of the event. This is a great thing for our youth …
to have a positive role model. We need more of this all the time.”
DBHS
student 16-year-old Joell hopes to play football in college. He is a
linebacker right now for the school. He loved doing the drills.
“[My
favorite part is] we had to run inside the box [ladder] and outside of
it and do burpies,” he said as he described some of the drills.
Nine-year-old
Mickeelah, who was one of the few girls in the group, came out because
Denard is her cousin. She normally gets to see him only on holidays so
this day was special.
“Racing
is my favorite part. I did some drills. Some of them were hard for me,”
she said, adding, “[For lunch], we had a hot dog, Pringles, a granola
[bar] and some juice [among other items available].”
Volunteer Bruny Colquhour felt the event went well.
“Everything
is very organized. The kids look forward to it every year. Shoelace is
doing great for the community. It inspires the kids to dream big,” she
said.
Besides
Denard, there were other well-known players who attended either the
event this day or the 1st annual basketball event that happened the
night before. They included Robinson’s teammates from the Jaguars,
including wide receivers Tony Washington and Rashad Lawrence; J.T.
Thomas from the New York Giants; Rashard Robinson from the San Francisco
49ers, Adrian Witty from the Cincinnati Bearcats and rapper Ace Hood.
Denard not only helped kids to improve their skills, but taught them the importance of education.
He
explained to one student who did not like to read, “In order for you to
play football, you have to have your education first. You have to use
school to get you there. If I could do all this work in football, I can
do it in school.”
Besides doing football drills and having lunch, students got to enjoy themselves jumping in bounce houses.
He
didn’t let students leave without delivering one last powerful message,
saying, “Always have a role model. My role model was my dad. I want to
be that person [for you all]. If I see somebody I look up to, I always
want to be better than them. You all can do whatever you want. You can
be president; you can be an astronaut; you can be a football player … It
is here for the taking. Never do it for the haters. Every time I step
on the field, I do it for love. I do it for people who support me. Do it
for the people who support you.”

Le'Nalors News Update - Deerfield Packer Rattlers Tradition " Over " ????
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Denard Robinson played in the Deerfield Beach Packer Rattlers league and New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul took part in the peewee football league.
But now the city will switch to a football/cheerleading program run by former NFL players – also former Packer Rattlers – who say they will offer a more complete program.
"I understand what it's like to be a kid in this community," said Jerome McDougle, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants, and whose McDougle Family Foundation is taking over the city's football program.
He'll be working with his brother, Stockar McDougle, who has played with the Detroit Lions, the Jacksonville Jaguars and and the Miami Dolphins.
"My brother and I had the opportunity to get to the highest level in our craft and a lot of people look up to us," Jerome McDougle said.
City leaders say they expect the McDougle Foundation will take in the 300-plus players and cheerleaders who have participated with the Packer Rattlers and the city-run football league, the Deerfield Beach Raiders. Everyone will benefit, they say, because the new league will have professional experience in critical issues such head injuries and leadership-building.
City Manager Burgess Hanson said it isn't so much what the Packer Rattlers lack, but what the McDougle Foundation can offer.
"On the staff, we have Ryan Reckley, graduate and football standout from Boston College and we also have the McDougle brothers, Desmond Cook, a Stanford University standout" from Sunrise, Hanson said. "That's the type of team you want to put in on something like this."
Former city commissioner Ben Preston said he's sad to see the Packer Rattlers go.
"They have a very strong history of trying to promote good values with the kids in the community," Preston said. "A long time ago, people conceived of an idea, had the fortitude to stick to it and see it become a reality. It is something that is really uplifting."
Diandra Tigner, another resident, said she couldn't understand why the city was starting from scratch.
"Everything they are trying to do, we're already doing it," she said. "Some of these guys, they are father figures. If you take this program away, who are they going to look up to?"
Commissioner Gloria Battle, who spoke in favor of the change, said there's little doubt the Packer Rattlers have a long and storied history in the city.
"Packer Rattlers was an outstanding organization during its infancy," she said. "But it has devolved into something that parents don't want to send their kids to."
She said she routinely receives complaints from parents about how their young children are getting suited up, but don't get a chance to play or cheer.
"My concern is for the children," she said, recalling one parent of a pre-teen being told she was "too chunky" to cheer. "My heart bleeds every time."
Packer Rattler officials could not be reached for comment on this issue, but at the meeting they said the city's decision means the league will lose priority on city fields. And that will almost certainly mean game over for a Deerfield institution.
"We put hard work into this organization and if you allow this, it's going to go away," said Precious Johnson, who said she's been on the Packer Rattlers board of directors for four years. "

Parking will be available at the Oveta McKeithen Recreational Complex (formerly known as Westside Park-445 SW 2nd Street) for the carnival. Shuttle service will be provided for walkers in the parade from the Oveta McKeithen Recreational Complex (445 SW 2nd St.) to the Cove Shopping Center (1580 SE 3rd Ct.) starting at 8:00 AM. The last shuttle for participants will be at 8:30 AM. If you arrive after 8:30 AM you will need to drive to the Cove Shopping Center as there will no longer be transportation provided prior to the parade start. Shuttle service will be provided back to the Cove Shopping Center (1580 SE 3rd Ct.) from the Oveta McKeithen Recreational Complex (445 SW 2nd St.) following the conclusion of the parade until 2:00 PM, or when the ceremony concludes

City begins process to shut down after-hours bar " Tropicate " ????
The City Commission Tuesday unanimously agreed with the city attorney's recommendation to sue for the club to be declared a "public nuisance" — which would be the first step in getting it shut down, according to Rebecca Medina Stewart, city spokeswoman.
Broward Sheriff's Capt. Robert Schnakenberg came to the City Commission to list the ways the party at the 12-year-old restaurant and lounge at 4251 N. Dixie Highway has gotten out of control.
"In three years, there's been over 170 calls for service just at that location," Schnakenberg said.
Stabbings, shootings, nine felony drug or gun arrests, alcohol served to minors and fights that required several districts to send in personnel were on his list.
But Rocky Pericles, manager of the club, called the attention his establishment is receiving "harassment." A lot of what happens in the surrounding area of southeast Deerfield Beach has been unfairly attributed to the club, he said.
"We didn't have any shootings at our establishment," he said. "It never happened at Tropicante."
Club Tropicante is currently in litigation with the city, appealing the city's judgment that it can't serve alcohol until 4 a.m.
Pericles also denied the BSO reports that his establishment has improperly charged cars to park on city streets. His club's hours are from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. — outside the regular hours of alcohol service — because it is located in an area that was annexed from Broward County into Deerfield Beach. So, its rights to serve alcohol are grandfathered in, he said.
"They are coming down on us because we're an urban crowd," Pericles said. "They come around and ticket cars in the parking lot."
Still, Commissioner Gloria Battle said that she's received complaints about the Club Tropicante crowd warming up for the party at Johnie McKeithen Park, at 629 N. Deerfield Ave.
"We constantly get complaints about that park when they are out there," she said. "They play loud music and there are a lot of elderly people who live around there."
The club's attorney said he'll be glad to defend the club against the "nuisance" label.
"The club has been operating under a scrutiny no one deserves," said lawyer Daniel Aaronson. "The club operates lawfully."

Le'Nalors Local News - McDougle brothers hand out $2K in scholarships
Even
though the Deerfield Beach High School football team came up short in
its game on Friday night against visiting Jacksonville Bolles, Bucks
quarterback Teddrick Moffett was the big winner earlier in the week when
he was presented with a very large check.
Moffett
and Blanche Ely High School linebacker David Francis were each awarded
$1,000 scholarships from the McDougle Family Foundation. The two players
were recognized as MVPs of the rain-shortened McDougle Bowl held in
honor of the McDougle Brothers on Sept. 12.
Stockar
McDougle (1996 Deerfield Beach grad) and Jerome McDougle (1997 Blanche
Ely grad) were on hand for the second annual McDougle Bowl game. Stockar
McDougle went on to play college football at the University of
Oklahoma, while Jerome McDougle played at the University of Miami. Both
brothers went on to play in the NFL.
The
scholarships were handed out during a pep rally at Deerfield Beach.
Moffett accounted for four scores, while Francis had an interception and
fumble recovery.
The
mission of the McDougle Family Foundation and Firstability Program is
to encourage teens to stay focused on their education and provide
at-risk students with support during those crisis moments.
