It would be hard to put together a list of the greatest Marlins players ever and not include the man dubbed "Mr. Marlin." A member of both the 1997 and 2003 World Series Championship teams, Conine is one of the few constants during the Marlins' brief history. He finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 1993, the first season that the Marlins existed. He followed that up by making All-Star Game appearances in 1994 and 1995. Conine's 553 RBIs as a Marlin are third in franchise history.

Sheffield's numbers are Hall of Fame worthy, though connections to performance-enhancing drugs have kept him out of the Hall of Fame to this point. On paper, though, the production that Sheffield put up was incredible, and the parts of six years that he spent in Miami actually represent the largest chunk of his 22-season career spent with any one team. 1996 was the only time that Sheffield played more than 140 games in a season with the Marlins, and he led the National League in on-base percentage (.465), OPS (1.090) and OPS+ (189) that season. A year later, Sheffield hit .320 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs in the playoffs, helping the Marlins to capture their first World Series title.

3. José Fernández (2013-2016)

A first-round pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, Fernández is probably the most gifted arm to ever pitch for the Marlins. He posted a 2.19 ERA and 2.73 FIP in 2013, winning the National League Rookie of the Year Award and finishing third in NL Cy Young voting at the age of 20. Among qualified starting pitchers, Fernández's 2.58 ERA between 2013 and 2016 is second only to future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw. Fernández's tragic death in September of 2016 at the age of 24 was one of the most difficult moments the sport has had to deal with over the last decade.

4. Dontrelle Willis (2003-2007)

With one of the most unique windups in MLB history, "The D-Train" was a fan favorite in Miami and beyond during the five seasons that he spent with the Marlins. Willis broke into the league in 2003, and won the National League Rookie of the Year Award and was an All-Star in a season where he'd also help the Marlins to capture a World Series title. Two seasons later, Willis led the National League in wins (22), complete games (seven), complete-game shutouts (five) and HR/9 (0.4), finishing second to Chris Carpenter in NL Cy Young Award voting. Willis' star didn't burn for a long time, but he sure was fun to watch at the height of his powers.

5. Luis Castillo (1996-2005)

In 10 seasons with the Fish, Castillo made three All-Star teams and won three Gold Glove Awards. He also led the National League in stolen bases in both 2000 and 2002, and is the franchise's all-time leader with 281 stolen bases. Castillo's 35-game hitting streak in 2002 is the longest in Marlins history.

The Le'Nalors Unsung Sunday - Ottis Anderson

Ottis Jerome Anderson (born January 19, 1957) is an American former football running back who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Giants. He played college football at Miami and was selected eighth overall in the 1979 NFL Draft by the Cardinals, where he spent his first eight seasons. In his first season, Anderson was named Offensive Rookie of the Year and received Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors when he set the Cardinals all-time record for rushing yards with 1605. He also received a second Pro Bowl selection the following year. Traded to the Giants in 1986 amid a production decline, Anderson won two Super Bowl titles in Super Bowl XXI and Super Bowl XXV. Anderson was named MVP of the latter after playing a central part in the Giants' ball-control offense that allowed them to set the Super Bowl record for time of possession.  

No reasonable person is going to confuse Ottis Anderson for being one of the top-five running backs in the history of the NFL, but he is nevertheless grossly underrated by far too many who follow the NFL. Anderson is a member of the 10,000 rushing yards club. He won the Rookie of the Year and the Comeback Player of the Year awards as a professional, and Anderson was named the Most Valuable Player for Super Bowl XXV. While you may not put him in your top-tier of all-time great running backs, Anderson deserves more than a mention for a spot in the next tier of that imaginary list.

The Le'Nalors Sunday News - Ultra Music Festival draws big crowds to Miami

 It’s back – and more colorful and even louder than ever: The grand return of the Ultra Music Festival in downtown Miami.

People from all over the region, and likely the country, expressed their excitement Friday.

“The Miami vibe – I expect something special,” one attendee said. “Everybody is here from so many places in this world, and (we’re) all here to experience one thing: music.”

The COVID-19 pandemic canceled the event the last two years. The fest was moved to Key Biscayne the year before that.

But now? It’s back to downtown Miami, where it all started.

With all the excitement comes the big crowd and a big responsibility for first-responders.

“We have Narcan, we got IV fluids – we have anything that may be needed, whether it’s a diabetic emergency or cardiac emergency,” Lt. Pete Sanchez said.

Miami Fire Rescue units were on standby.

Officials said that a total of 64 people were evaluated by rescue workers and 14 were transported to the hospital with with varying issues, but none that were life threatening.

Police said there were four arrests made on Friday, all for possession of narcotics.

One-hundred firefighters a day will be spread throughout the event, and Miami Police were set to handle crowd control, road closures and any other issues that arise.

 UFC fighter Luis Pena arrested in Deerfield Beach

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – UFC lightweight fighter Luis Pena was arrested on Saturday in Broward County.

According to records, the 28-year-old is facing felony charges of domestic violence and battery.

This is the second time this year that Pena was arrested in South Florida.

He made an appearance in bond court on Sunday morning and was ordered to stay away from the victim.

Pena was also arrested five months ago in Coral Springs on charges of robbery and battery.

2021 box office closes with more fireworks for 'Spider-Man'

NEW YORK – Hollywood closed out 2021 with more fireworks at the box office for “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which topped all films for the third straight week and already charts among the highest grossing films ever. But even with all the champagne popping for “No Way Home,” the film industry heads into 2022 with plenty of reason for both optimism and concern after a year that saw overall ticket revenue double that of 2020, but still well off the pre-pandemic pace. 

Movie theaters began the year mostly shuttered but ended it with a monster smash. Sony Pictures' Marvel sequel “No Way Home” grossed an estimated $52.7 million over the weekend to bring its three-week total to $609.9 million. That ranks 10th all-time in North America. Worldwide, it's made $1.37 billion, a total that puts it above “Black Panther” and makes it the 12th highest grossing film globally.

Rapper Kodak Black arrested on trespassing charge in Pompano Beach

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Rapper Kodak Black, whose real name is Bill Kapri, was arrested early Saturday morning in Pompano Beach, the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

According to authorities, Black was taken into custody just before 1:30 a.m. near the 1600 block of Northwest 10th Drive.

Further details about the circumstances surrounding the accusations against him were not immediately released.

Black previously had a three-year federal prison sentence for falsifying documents used to buy weapons at a Miami gun store commuted by President Donald Trump on his last day in office. He had served about half his sentence.

In April 2021, Black was sentenced to probation for assaulting a teenage girl in a South Carolina hotel room.

He was originally charged with rape, but accepted a deal and pleaded guilty to first-degree assault at the Florence County courthouse.

 Report: 1 NFL Team Was ‘Scared Off’ Of Deshaun Watson

The Panthers and the Dolphins have been the two teams mentioned the most for the Houston Texans star quarterback.

However, according to a report from ESPN, the Panthers have backed off their pursuit of the former Clemson Tigers quarterback.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the Panthers were “scared off” their pursuit of the Pro Bowl quarterback

Watson is facing 22 lawsuits alleging sexual assault and inappropriate behavior and has not played a down for the Texans this season. He has a no-trade clause in his contract, which he’s willing to waive for the Dolphins.

The Panthers, who explored a potential Watson deal dating back to the offseason, got indications that Watson would be interested in playing for them but hadn’t received that commitment in writing — a customary step for a no-trade clause — as of this week.

The Panthers have major uncertainty at the quarterback position, as Sam Darnold has been inconsistent at-best this season. However, it doesn’t sound like they will be pursuing Watson moving forward.

The NFL’s trade deadline is set for 4 p.m. E.T. on Tuesday

Sudan protests: Massive crowds demonstrate against military takeover!

The streets of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, were packed with protesters on Saturday morning, with demonstrators chanting anti-military slogans and waving anti-coup banners.

"No for military rule, yes for civilian rule," protesters shouted in videos posted to social media.

At least three people were shot dead by the military, according to the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors (CCSD), which is aligned with the civil component of the now-dissolved Sovereign Council.

One person had been shot in the head and another shot in the stomach, the CCSD said in a post to Twitter.

The CCSD also said at least 100 others were wounded during the protests when the military fired live bullets and used tear gas at demonstrators in several areas across the country to disperse the crowds.

The nationwide protests were called by the activist coalition Sudanese Professional Association (SPA), who were instrumental in organizing the 2019 Sudan uprising that led to the toppling of President Omar al-Bashir's three decade rule.

The SPA is demanding the restoration of the country's transitional civilian government and is calling on protesters to join a "million-man march" against the military takeover.

Newcastle struggling to convince Ajax boss Erik ten Hag to take job - report

Newcastle face an uphill battle to convince Ajax manager Erik ten Hag to take charge at St James' Park, according to reports.

The club was taken over by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund earlier this month.

Steve Bruce was relieved of his duties following his 1000th game in management, a 3-2 defeat by Tottenham.

Graeme Jones is currently in interim charge of the Magpies while the board looks for a permanent successor to Bruce.

And the pressure is beginning to build after Newcastle's winless run at the start of the season was extended to 10 games with a 3-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday.

The club with the wealthiest owners in world football currently sits second-bottom of the Premier League table.

The search for a new manager is also proving difficult, with the Sunday Mirror reporting that Ten Hag is unlikely to take the job.

The new owners are said to be planning a charm offensive to try and lure the Dutchman away from Ajax.

They also want to appoint Marc Overmars, the Eredivisie side's direct of football, in a similar role at St James' Park.

But it would take a massive effort for Newcastle to successfully persuade Ten Hag to leave Ajax for the Magpies.

In his current position the 51-year-old is competing for silverware and leading a talented team in the Champions League.

He is settled in Amsterdam and is now into his fifth season at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Newcastle would be able to offer Ten Hag a huge pay rise, thought to be five times more than the £2m he currently pockets per year.

But Ten Hag is not enticed by the prospect of taking over at a club battling relegation from the Premier League.

He is also on Barcelona's shortlist as they seek a replacement for Ronald Koeman, while Ten Hag's name has also been put forward as a possible candidate for Manchester United.

It is hard to see him swapping all that for a dogfight with Newcastle.

Le'Nalors - Deerfield Beach Fl - News Update - Murder Suicide

 Just before 1 a.m. on Monday, April 26, Broward Regional Communications received a call regarding a domestic disturbance in the 5200 block of Northeast 8th Terrace in Deerfield Beach. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded and discovered a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue also responded. Paramedics pronounced the man deceased on scene. Paramedics transported the woman to a nearby hospital where she died. The preliminary investigation reveals that the man shot the woman before fatally shooting himself. BSO’s Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.

Le'Nalors - Deerfield Beach Fl - News Update - BSO releases sketch of attempted kidnapper

Broward Sheriff’s Office violent crimes detectives are releasing a composite sketch of an attempted kidnapping suspect who tried to kidnap a female at the Highland Village Gardens Park in Deerfield Beach.
At about 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 14, in the 4900 block of NE 2 Avenue, a white male suspect, 40 to 50 years old, approximately 5 ft. 8 in. tall and roughly 180 1bs. with gray/white hair approached the victim while she was walking her dog.
 
The male suspect, who appeared to be homeless, was last seen wearing black shorts and no shirt.
 
Anyone with information about the identity or location of the suspect is asked to call Violent Crimes Detective Tiberio Barbosa at 954-321-4278. Reports can also be made anonymously to Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or online at browardcrimestoppers.org. Anonymous tips that lead to an arrest are eligible for a reward of up to $3,000.  

The FBI on Wednesday arrested two more Floridians on charges tied to the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol. They are Samuel Camargo, of Deerfield Beach, who was charged with civil disorder, unlawfully entering the Capitol and disorderly conduct, and Joseph Randall Biggs, a Proud Boys member who was arrested in Central Florida on similar charges.

An outstanding receiver with a strong and accurate arm that is regarded as one of the best ever and that few base runners challenged, he intimidated base runners and, according to the press, had them "hugging the bases." Although his pegs to second base were almost invariably on the money, he threw a "light" ball. He caught much of the game on his knees, but threw to second base without standing up, and was exceptionally quick fielding bunts.

In 1910 he was the best catcher in baseball, and gained notoriety in Cuba when, in exhibition games against the Tigers, he threw out the immortal Ty Cobb three times in three attempts. As a base runner himself, Petway was a good base stealer. The lean, speedy athlete was better known as a base stealing threat than as a slugger. His prowess on the bases was demonstrated when he led the 1912 Cuban winter league with 20 stolen bases. Also an excellent bunter, he fit right into Rube Foster's racehorse style of baseball and was often used in the lead off position. He was also a respectable hitter, batting .390 in the exhibitions against the Tigers.

The premier catcher of the day and the first great receiver in black baseball history, Petway was always in demand by the best teams. He first caught for the Leland Giants in 1906 but, abandoning his studies at Nashville's Meharry Medical College, he left after the season to serve stints with the Brooklyn Royal Giants and the Philadelphia Giants before returning to Chicago, accompanied by John Henry Lloyd and Frank Duncan, for the 1910 season. That year he registered a .397 average as a member of an aggregation that Rube Foster considered to be the greatest team of all time, black or white

Petway continued as the backstop for Foster's superb Chicago American Giants, at a time (1910-1918) when they were virtually perennial champions. During his tenure with Foster's team he was disabled twice by strained ligaments in his throwing arm and once by a leg injury, losing substantial playing time for three consecutive seasons, 1914-1916.

Also a relatively good hitter, he hit .393 for the Lelands in 1910 but, although he was referred to as "Home Run" Petway early in his career, he was not a genuine power hitter, as attested by his averages of .253, .208, and .200 in 1916-1918. In 1916, on his last trip to Cuba, he hit .333, but managed only a .210 lifetime average for his Cuban career, interspersed during the years 1908-16. He is credited with averages of .182 in 1918 and .171 against major-leaguers in exhibitions. 


A smart ballplayer, the scrappy receiver was a student of the game and learned much from his years with Rube Foster, enabling him to end his baseball career as a player-manager with the Detroit Stars. As a manager he was slightly hotheaded but was good with young players. His batting averages in Detroit were .313, .268, .337, and .341 in 1921-1924, before slumping to .156 in 1925, his last season. Altogether he spent seven seasons with the Stars. After his retirement he lived in Chicago, where he managed an apartment complex.

Le'Nalors - Deerfield Beach News - Update - 2021 Florida Renaissance Festival canceled due to coronavirus pandemic

 

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – The coronavirus pandemic has caused the cancellation of yet another major event in South Florida – the annual Florida Renaissance Festival.

The festival was scheduled to run from Feb. 13 to March 28, 2021 at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach, but organizers have decided to cancel the festival as COVID-19 cases remain high.

“This decision was one that we felt we needed to make in order to ensure the safety of our staff, our vendors, volunteers, entertainers and our loyal patrons,” event organizers said in a statement released Tuesday. “We are grateful for your continued support and look forward to our 30th Anniversary, in 2022, which will be bigger and better than ever.”

The annual family-friendly event is typically held on weekends only and boasts more than 100 performers who help transport attendees back to the 16th century.

The Le'Nalors Unsung Sunday - Millie Bailey

 

 

Millie Bailey grew up in the Deep South. During World War II she joined the Army. She ended up the Commander of a women’s unit. Now she lives in a Senior Apartment complex in Columbia, Howard County. It’s been a memorable journey for this accomplished Senior Citizen.

Millie explained, “I haven’t had a paying job since 1975, but my young friends say I shouldn’t say I’m retired, just say I work without pay.”

She has volunteered in different capacities during the past few decades. She has worked with children in Howard County Schools. She has packed care packages for soldiers overseas. She has been on advisory boards from police to education

Her dream is for true equality, “I would like for everybody to see what they can do to help somebody else, like when you go to buy groceries buy some extra cans and bring it to the food bank. Yes, live every day thinking what can I do to make it a better world”.
